RETURN TO "TRICKS" LESSON PLAN
Lesson Overview
Students will learn how artists use the elements of art to create depth in two-dimensional art work. They will practice using linear perspective and incorporate the methods they learn about to create a new setting for the Mona Lisa.

Lesson Essential Questions
  • What did artists do before they learned tricks?
  • How is size used to create depth in art work?
  • How is placement of objects used to create depth in art work?
  • How is linear perspective used to create depth in art work?
  • How do artists use these "tricks" in artwork?
  • How is color used to create depth in art work?

ACTIVITY ONE  One/Two Weeks
Materials
  • pencils
  • colored pencils or marker
  • rulers

PROCEDURE

You can use a smart board, projector to do as a group or computer lab if you want the students to work individually. Visit the site by Harold Olejarz. Have students complete the tutorial.

To test their understanding of the concepts have them complete the hand outs for One Point Perspective from the website Dawns Brain.  To save OR extend time you can have the students complete the worksheets as pencil line drawings or have them embellish each worksheet with color and shading.

Boxes
Letters
Shapes
Room

Assessment
Ability to draw converging and parallel lines accurately on worksheets
Development of extended requirements on worksheets

ACTIVITY TWO*** Two days+
PROCEDURE
Using a smart-board, projector or handouts, model the following six methods for showing depth.
View the artwork by Doris Lee Thanksgiving
Point out the use of:
  1.  overlapping of characters to show depth
  2.  size difference between characters in the foreground and background
  3. placement of table and stove are lower on the picture plane than dish hutch
  4. color on walls in first room are brighter than in the second room
  5. fewer details on clothing, people and objects in back room
  6. converging lines in floor tile pattern

Once you have modeled identifying the above methods for showing depth, show the following art works and point out the addition of  atmospheric perspective to the "tricks" they will be using later in this unit to create their own vacation scene for the Mona Lisa.   Have the students fill out the "Tricks Questionnaire" as you show the art works.

1. Seascape at Port-en-Bessin, Normandy, Georges Seurat, 1888

2. Harbor Scene II, Louisa Matthiasdottir, 1985

3. Flower Beds. Vincent Van Gogh, 1886

4. The Delivery of the Keys. 1482. Fresco. Sistine Chapel, Rome, Italy.

5. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, 1503-1504

Assessment
Ability to identify on the questionnaire  three or more "tricks" used by artists in each art work.

ACTIVITY THREE - Two Weeks +
VACATION TIME!!!

Materials
  • 12 x 18 drawing paper used in landscape position
  • markers, tempera paint, or colored pencils
  • print out of Mona Lisa pdf.
  • 18 inch metal ruler
  • Travel or National Geographic magazines

PROCEDURE

Using the magazines, have students select a destination that interests them to send "Mona" on vacation to.

Print out the pdf. of Mona Lisa and copy one for each student. Have students trim the image then select a place in their picture plane to paste the image to allow for linear perspective.
Have students combine the use of linear perspective and three of the "tricks" they learned about earlier in the lesson to send Mona to a new setting.  Make sure they "dress" her appropriately for the new location.  It can be in a city, out in the country, another planet.... This is their creation.
TIPS
Remind the students to draw their orthogonal lines lightly to make them easier to erase.
Suggest placing her at a table or behind a wall to make it easier to incorporate into a scene.  She can also be inside a window or a vehicle.

Assessment
Ability to use ruler accurately to show linear perspective
Demonstration of three or more "tricks" in showing depth
Rubric for student self evaluation to be filled out by students.

EXTRA for fun show students:
Contemporary artists using "tricks" in their art work
Julian Beever
Tracy Lee Stum
Kurt Wenner

ADVANCED
Students can grid their Mona Lisa's Vacation art work to create side walk art using chalk.
